In a previous article, we discussed in detail the key points that hosts should pay attention to regarding the cleanliness of their property, in order to provide the best possible experience for their guests (you can read the relevant article here.
Today, we will focus on the guest’s perspective and, more specifically, on the aspects worth checking upon arrival at a short-term rental property. It is clear that the host is responsible for cleanliness, but we must not forget that it is ultimately the guest who will confirm whether everything was as it should be.
Arrival at the Airbnb property
You have just arrived at the accommodation you booked through the platform. In the photos, the property looked immaculate, and the ratings were quite high. Now is the moment to judge for yourself whether the images reflect reality.
Overall impression of cleanliness
The first thing you will notice upon entering the interior of the property is the overall impression of the space. A clean, tidy, and well-cared-for home immediately creates a sense of trust and relaxation.
The furniture does not overcrowd the space, the decorative items do not create visual clutter, and there is harmony between the different areas of the accommodation. It quickly becomes apparent that the host has allowed the space to breathe and has not overwhelmed the eye.
Frequently touched surfaces
Once your first impression is positive, your next step should be to focus on the cleanliness of the points and surfaces we frequently touch.
Such areas include light switches, remote controls for electronic devices (televisions, air conditioners), door and window handles, handles on kitchen appliances (such as the oven), the balcony or staircase railing, and so on.
Of course, one should never neglect to pay the utmost attention to personal hygiene areas. Nothing should make you wonder, even for a second, whether the necessary cleaning and disinfection of the space and sanitary ware has been carried out.
Cleaning supplies
If even the most detailed cleanliness check of the Airbnb has been successful, the next step is to see whether the cleaning supplies – and not only those – left by the host are sufficient and suitable for you to remain satisfied and to award the highest rating.
The property should be equipped with cleaning products for every use, such as washing-up liquid, all-purpose cleaner, glass cleaner, laundry detergent if a washing machine is provided, sponges for every use (dishwashing, personal hygiene) – always sealed – kitchen roll, toilet paper, and possibly hand sanitiser or wet wipes.
Naturally, the presence of a broom, dustpan, mop, and bucket is essential, so that you can freshen up the property yourself if you wish.
All of the above demonstrate that the host has anticipated your basic needs and cares about your comfort.
What if something isn’t as it should be?
All of the above describe the ideal scenario for your stay. However, if you discover something that shouldn’t be there – such as a stain on the sheet, a dish that hasn’t been properly washed, fingerprints on the mirror, or fluff on the floor – we recommend that you first remain calm.
Next, contact the host or owner of the Airbnb. Clearly state what you have found and where, and if necessary, take photos with your mobile and send them to the contact number provided.
If, for any reason, the issue cannot be resolved immediately, you can then reach out to the platform through which you made the booking. You can refer to your reservation page, and a member of the team will intervene to resolve the issue.
In any case, hospitality is a two-way experience. On your part, you are expected to leave the space as you would wish to find it: reasonably tidy, with lights switched off, and without damage or rubbish left behind.
Do not leave the air conditioning or electrical appliances on when you are not in the property. Airbnb, and short-term rentals in general, are based on a community that operates on trust.
Cleanliness is perhaps the most crucial factor that will determine the quality of your stay. For this reason, it is your inalienable right to demand it, but it is also your obligation to respect it.
